Bodh Gaya in Bihar grew around the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree, where the Buddha is held to have attained enlightenment. Monasteries founded by Buddhist countries run guesthouses, so lodging is varied and the town is small enough to cover on foot. Gaya has the nearest airport and railhead. The winter teaching season, December to February, is the busiest; summers are severe.
