About Varanasi
One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities, Varanasi lines the west bank of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, with a chain of ghats and a lane network no vehicle can enter, so you walk. Dawn boat rides and the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh are the fixed points, with Sarnath a short drive out. Winter fog delays flights, the monsoon floods the lower ghats, and summer is very hot.
