About Namobuddha

Namobuddha, also written Namo Buddha, is a Buddhist pilgrimage site on a ridge in Kavrepalanchok district, southeast of Kathmandu and reached in a few hours by road through Dhulikhel or Panauti, either of which can also be the start of a walk up. The stupa marks the place where, by tradition, an earlier incarnation of the Buddha gave his body to a starving tigress, and it is counted among the most important Buddhist sites of the Kathmandu valley. Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery stands above it with a few hundred monks, a monastic college and a clinic. There is no town here in any ordinary sense: a handful of guesthouses, a few retreat properties on the surrounding hills, terraced farmland and trails down to Panauti. People come to sit, to walk or to stay at the monastery rather than to sightsee. At around 1,750 m it stays cooler than Kathmandu. Spring and autumn are clear, and monsoon rain falls June to September.
