In Sri Lanka's central hills, Kandy sits around a lake and the Temple of the Tooth, and altitude keeps it cooler than the coast. It is reached by train or road from Colombo, and the onward hill country railway towards Ella is one reason people come. The town centre can be walked, while sights further out need a tuk tuk. Rain is heaviest around October to December, with a drier stretch early in the year.
