About Varkala

Red laterite cliffs run for several kilometres above Papanasam beach, and the clifftop path carries the cafes, guesthouses, yoga shalas and Ayurveda rooms that are the reason most people stay. The beach below is an active pilgrimage site where families perform ancestral rites, and the Janardana Swami temple and the Sivagiri Mutt sit in the town behind, so dress is modest once you step off the cliff strip. Varkala Sivagiri station puts Thiruvananthapuram under an hour away by train, which is the easier approach than the road. The sea is rough and not for swimming through the June to September monsoon.
