About Puducherry (Pondicherry)

Puducherry is a union territory of its own rather than a part of Tamil Nadu, and the old town is really two towns either side of a filled-in canal: the French quarter of grid streets and shuttered villas behind the seafront, and the Tamil town inland. The seafront itself is a rock-armoured promenade with no sand, closed to traffic in the evenings, and the swimming beaches are a few kilometres out. Auroville sits about 8 km north west, and that is where most of the yoga and Ayurveda stays are rather than in the town. Chennai is the nearest international airport, roughly three hours by road. Heat peaks from April to June and the north-east monsoon runs October into December, so the settled months are either side of the new year.
