About Munnar

A tea-planting town at around 1,500 m in the Western Ghats, roughly four hours by road up from Kochi, where the draw is the estates themselves and a climate that drops into single figures at night. Eravikulam National Park above the town holds the Nilgiri tahr and sits under Anamudi, the highest peak in South India, though the park closes for part of February and March while the tahr are calving. Accommodation is resorts and homestays spread along the estate roads rather than gathered in the town, so a car for the day is close to necessary. Mist closes the hills most mornings and is heaviest in July and August.
