Udhagamandalam, usually called Ooty, sits in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu and is reached by road from Coimbatore or Mysuru, or on the slow mountain railway from Mettupalayam. The town is spread out, so expect autos or a hired car for the lake, botanical garden and viewpoints. April to June is the busy season, when the plains heat up; rooms are easier to find outside it. Nights are cold year round.
