About San Juan
San Juan is the capital of Puerto Rico and the oldest city under United States jurisdiction, founded in 1521. Old San Juan is a compact grid of pastel colonial buildings behind the fortifications of El Morro and Castillo San Cristobal, together a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is small enough to walk end to end. The beach hotels sit east of it in Condado and Isla Verde. For travellers from the United States the practicalities are unusual for the Caribbean: Puerto Rico is a US territory, the currency is the dollar, and US citizens need no passport, which removes two of the frictions and one of the costs that usually come with an international beach trip.
