Built around a chain of artificial lakes in southern Rajasthan, Udaipur stays compact: the City Palace, Jagdish Temple and the ghats sit inside a walkable old town where rooftop guesthouses cluster. Boat rides on Lake Pichola and sunsets at the Monsoon Palace are the standard outings. Lake levels depend on the rains. September to March is comfortable; the months before the monsoon are very hot.
