Close to the Pakistan border in Punjab, Amritsar keeps local transport light: the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the old bazaars sit within walking distance of each other. The temple complex runs a community kitchen and pilgrim lodging. The Wagah border ceremony needs a taxi each way. Winters are cold and foggy, summers very hot, and Baisakhi in April fills the town.
