Himachal Pradesh's capital and a former summer seat of the colonial government, Shimla is reached by road from Chandigarh or on the narrow gauge railway from Kalka. The Mall and the Ridge are pedestrian, so a room near the centre saves hauling luggage up slopes. Snow falls in winter, while school holidays in May and June crowd the roads up from Delhi and Punjab.
