Where the Ganges leaves the hills for the plains in Uttarakhand, Haridwar is a pilgrimage town built around the ghats at Har Ki Pauri and the evening aarti. It is walkable, well connected by train from Delhi, and often paired with Rishikesh a short bus ride away. Dharamshalas and simple guesthouses dominate. The Kanwar Yatra in the monsoon and Kumbh years bring very large crowds.
