About Kollam

A port and cashew processing city on Ashtamudi Lake, at the southern end of the Kerala backwaters, known historically as Quilon. The long public boat north to Alappuzha starts here and takes most of a day, which is the cheapest way anybody sees the backwaters. Kollam is a working city first and a visitor town second: the lake stays and the Ayurveda centres are spread along the shore outside the centre rather than in it, and the beaches south of town are quiet and largely undeveloped. Thiruvananthapuram is the nearest airport, about 70 km south. The south-west monsoon runs June to September and the north-east monsoon October into November.
