About Kumarakom

A village strung along the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake in Kottayam district, and almost all of it is resorts, Ayurveda centres and houseboat jetties facing the water. There is no town centre to speak of and little to do on foot, so a stay is built around the lake, the bird sanctuary on the old rubber estate, and whatever treatment or boat schedule the property runs. It costs more per day than most of Kerala for a structural reason rather than a seasonal one: the cheap end barely exists here. Kottayam is about 16 km inland and is the rail head, and Kochi is the nearest airport. Two monsoons soak the area, June to September and October into November.
