About Rajkot

Rajkot is a working city in Saurashtra, the peninsula of western Gujarat, and it is not a sightseeing town: bearings, diesel engines, machine tools, castings and jewellery are what it makes, and there are something like 500 foundry units in the region around it. The airport flies domestic routes only. Gandhi's childhood home in the old town and the Watson Museum are what most visitors see, and both take an afternoon. Gujarat is a dry state, so alcohol is not sold to residents at all and a visitor from outside the state needs a permit. Several residential nature cure and naturopathy centres sit on land outside the built-up city, and for most people coming from beyond Gujarat that is the reason for the trip. March to June is very hot and the monsoon runs June to October, so the cool months either side of the new year are the settled stretch.
