About Edappal

A junction town of about thirty thousand people in Malappuram district, inland Kerala, where two state highways cross in the Ponnani Kole wetlands. It is not a holiday town and has almost no visitor trade of its own. People travel here for one reason, which is the rehabilitation hospital: orthopaedic and neurological rehabilitation, including stroke and spinal recovery, with Ayurveda run alongside the physiotherapy rather than instead of it. Stays are long and measured in weeks, and the accommodation is service apartments, villas and homestays within a few kilometres of the hospital rather than hotels. The hospital itself is at Kavilpadi, in Vattamkulam panchayat on the Edappal to Tirur road. Kozhikode and Kochi are the nearest airports, each roughly two hours by road. Treatment is quoted per patient after a clinical assessment and is not included in the daily figures shown here, which cover living costs only.
