Spread among boulder fields on the Tungabhadra in Karnataka, Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire, covering a wide area you get around by bicycle, scooter or auto rather than on foot. Hospet is the nearest railhead. Stays split between the temple side and the quieter Anegundi bank across the river. October to February is the workable season; summer is punishing.
