On the Ganges in the Uttarakhand foothills, Rishikesh divides between the ashrams and ghats near Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula and the rafting camps upriver towards Shivpuri. Yoga courses, walks and river trips are what most people come for, and alcohol and meat are not sold in the town. Haridwar is the nearest railhead. Rafting stops during the monsoon; autumn through spring is the settled stretch.
