About Rome
Rome stacks nearly three thousand years of building into a centre small enough to cross on foot: the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the evening streets of Trastevere, and Vatican City, a sovereign state, sitting inside the city boundary. Because the historic core is compact, most days need little more than a metro ticket, and the budget turns instead on where you sleep and how many ticketed sites you go inside. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months to walk it; August is hot and many neighbourhood restaurants close for the holidays.
